# Metronome

Set a tempo, pick a time signature and press Start. Tap the beat lights to change accents.

## How to practise with the metronome

Choose a tempo with the slider, the plus and minus buttons, the number box or **Tap tempo**: tap along with a song four or more times and the metronome takes the average. The Italian word under the number, such as *Andante* or *Allegro*, is the traditional name for that speed range; treat it as a loose guide, since sources draw the lines a little differently.

The **beats per bar** and **beat note** make the time signature. Each circle under the drum is one beat. Activate a circle to cycle it through *strong accent* (^), *accent* (>), *normal* (•) and *silent* (×). Silencing beats is a good test: if you can keep time through a silent beat, the time is in you and not only in the click.

**Subdivision** adds quieter clicks inside each beat: eighths, triplets, sixteenths or swing eighths, where the second note of each pair lands on the last third of the beat. The **speed trainer** adds a few BPM every few bars until it reaches the tempo you set, which is a simple way to build up a fast passage without jumping straight to full speed.

## Questions

**Which note gets the beat in 6/8 or 2/2?**

Here the BPM always counts the bottom number of the time signature. In 6/8 at 120, each eighth note is one click and the bar has six of them, with an accent on 1 and a lighter one on 4. If you would rather feel 6/8 in two big beats, set 2/4 with triplets at a third of the tempo: 40 BPM instead of 120.

**How accurate is an online metronome?**

Each click is placed on the Web Audio clock, which counts samples, a little ahead of time. That keeps the tempo exact to well under a millisecond, with no drift over long practice sessions. Bluetooth headphones delay every click by the same amount, so the tempo stays right even if the sound arrives late.

**Does it keep playing in a background tab?**

Yes. The timer that feeds the scheduler runs in a web worker, which browsers do not slow down the way they slow hidden pages. On a phone, locking the screen can still pause audio, so keep the screen on while you practise.
